Monthly Workshops
Our monthly workshop is the primary way in which STSFAN builds and maintains its intellectual community. Workshops are not paper presentations. Instead, authors share written work-in-progress (e.g., article drafts, dissertation chapter, book proposals) that the group discusses without the author’s input (other than initial framing) during most of the workshop with the last half hour devoted to having the author use the time as they choose. The workshops are thus both for the author and the community: the author learns how their paper is being read and could be improved; the community engages the work through constructive feedback and debate. Less polished work is almost always more generative.
